One of the most common mistakes travelers make is assuming that an International Driving Permit (IDP) replaces a national driver's license. In reality, that's not the case, and the difference is fundamental.
An IDP Is a Translation, Not a Separate Document
An International Driving Permit confirms that you hold a valid national license and translates its details into several languages using a standardized international format. On its own, without a national license, it has no legal force.
Why You Need to Carry Both Documents
When checked abroad, a traffic police officer or rental agent uses the IDP to read your details without needing a translation, but it's the national license that confirms authenticity and driving categories. That's why you must carry both documents together — an IDP is not valid on its own.
An IDP's validity can never exceed that of your national license: if your national license expires first, your International Driving Permit automatically becomes invalid at that same moment.
